On Friday the South & South East in Bloom regional results were announced at an awards ceremony at the Amex in Brighton. Storrington had three entries in their competition and received the following results:

  • St Mary’s Churchyard achieved a Silver Gilt in the churchyard category
  • Place Villerest was awarded a Silver Gilt in the single floral display category
  • Storrington Town Centre again received a Silver Gilt award, achieving 80% of the possible points but still 10 points short of the unattainable Gold!

However, we celebrate that the score continues to increase and we have now achieved 50 more points than our first entry back in 2012. There are many people to thank for this improvement over the past six years, and special awards were also presented:

  • For even more trips with the watering cart than usual – Nick Charman
  • For endless supplies of water during the long hot summer – Steve Tovee
  • For their poppy display marking 100 years since the end of the 1st World War – 1st Sullington Brownies
  • For endless support of the In Bloom entry and clean ups – Sue & Eddie Shelton
  • For the transformation of the Mill Lane car park beds – Gilly & Peter North
  • For a consistently beautiful front garden year after year – Marilyn Dadds

And in recognition of the endless hours invested over many years and the transformation of a number of areas of Storrington – to Gill Ion and Pat Mansbridge.

Young people join Storrington in Bloom effort

Posted

Storrington is preparing to welcome the judges from South & South East in Bloom tomorrow – our volunteers have been busy all year sprucing up the village, including another clean up event which took place on 3rd July. Thank you to everyone that lent a hand.

Wheelbarrow

First School Mural  Rydon flags

This week the efforts of our young people have become visible with the arrival of the flags designed by the students at Rydon Community College, the brightly coloured mural celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday painted by children at Storrington First School and the 10 ‘bright and beautiful’ themed wheelbarrows prepared and planted by local youth groups.

Judging for the Storrington in Bloom local competitions is underway and we look forward to announcing the winners at our awards ceremony in September.

Woodland Fun

Storrington Conservation Society helped facilitate an evening of woodland fun for our local Brownie unit to earn the “In the Woods” badge by bark rubbing, measuring tree height, identifying leaves, looking for bugs and tree hugging! All followed by delicious marshmallows toasted on a campfire!

Fryern Dell will be featured in our tour for the South & South East in Bloom judges in July. The site is already used by Storrington First School for their Forest Schools lessons and we are delighted to see it being enjoyed more and more by the young people of Storrington.

2nd Storrington Guides meet the Flower Fairies

Posted

On Wednesday 19th November, 2nd Storrington Guides had a themed evening to celebrate the life of Cicely Mary Barker creator of the flower fairies in recognition of Storrington in Bloom’s local theme for 2015. The Guides created fairy toadstools from marshmallows, learnt about Cicely’s life, read the flower fairy poems and created flower fairies of their own. A poster was created for display in the village.

2nd Storrington Guides Help In Bloom

Posted

On Wednesday 9th July, 2nd Storrington Guides joined Friends of Meadowside in a clear up for Storrington in Bloom. The girls split in to two groups, one litter picking around the meadow area and stream, the remainder heading to the library car park with brooms and litter pickers to clean up the library car park and steps. In just over an hour between the group of 18 they managed to collect up 10 bags of rubbish and several large bits of metal and wood! This demonstrates how much it is possible to achieve in a short amount of time if you put your mind to it.

With thanks to our sponsors

And a BIG thanks to all our volunteers and local businesses without whom none of this would be possible.
